Salt Sources

I did some internet research I was able to determine that Sifto has a mine at Unity, Saskatchewan, which produces table salt. Furthermore, according to this blog posting if your box of Sifto has the number 69 on it, then your salt comes from Unity. So I went into our kitchen, checked our box (picked up at Harry's), and found the 69 (right near the 1 KG on the front). I was quite delighted to learn that the salt we've been buying comes from much closer that I would have suspected. Unity is 117 miles NE of Saskatoon, near North Battleford.

Other facts I picked up on the way:

  • Canada is among the top 10 producers of salt worldwide. Another major salt production centre in Canada is Goderich, Ontario.
  • Canada uses the most salt per-capita in the world, largely due the amount of it we spread on our roads.
  • I did not find any information about salt mining operations in Manitoba.
